The Transition House Foundation (FOTH) began as a fund raising committee of the Cape Breton Transition House Association (CBTH). It was the second board committee formed in 1979 (the first was the House Committee). The first goal of the committee was to raise the funds in order to purchase and renovate a house for the Association. Their goal was achieved with the help of over 700 volunteers.
A door to door campaign resulted in collecting $30,000, which was matched by the Provincial Department of Community Services. After the shelter opened this committee continued to be a very important part of CBTH. In addition to helping to keep our shelter open, they provided funding for the children’s component of our service. Throughout the years they not only provided education to the community but also paid for all the essential extras not covered in our budget. Essential extras included such items as furniture, paint, beds, etc.
On April 3, 1986, this committee decided to separate from the Cape Breton Transition House Board. They formed the Friend’s of Transition House Foundation (Society). The objects of the Foundation are:
